AGENCY AND STRUCTURE RELATIONS IN THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE PUCUK REBUNG MOTIF IN ARCHITECTURAL MURALS IN BANDAR LAMPUNG

Abstract
The transformation of the Pucuk Rebung motif from traditional Lampung tapis textiles into architectural murals in the public spaces of Bandar Lampung City reflects the complex dynamics between cultural preservation and the demands of urban modernity. This study aims to analyze the structuration dynamics occurring in this transformation process through the relationship between creative agents and cultural structures. The study employs a qualitative approach with an instrumental case study design. Data were collected through non-participant observation, in-depth interviews with six informants (mural artists, tapis artisans, cultural figures, art educators, and representatives of the Bandar Lampung Arts Council), as well as document analysis. The data were then analyzed thematically and interpreted through Anthony Giddens’s (1984) structuration theory framework. The findings reveal three types of agents, namely artists/communities, institutions/government, and cultural figures, who interact through different logics, entry pathways, and resources, thereby shaping the duality of structure that simultaneously constrains and enables creative action. The dimensions of signification, domination, and legitimation operate simultaneously, while the mechanisms of time-space distanciation and recursivity allow the motif to transcend its original context without losing its legitimacy. The transformation of the Pucuk Rebung motif constitutes a multilayered structuration process that is not controlled by a single party but rather results from ongoing negotiations among agents within the urban public sphere.
